Real Nappies Event on Saturday!

Lewisham’s next nappy event takes place on Saturday (November 16th) at Wearside Service Centre, Wearside Road, Ladywell SE13 7EZ, 2pm to 4pm.

Come along to find out how using real nappies could save you money and help the environment. You can also get a free £20 voucher at the event, which you can put towards the cost of buying some real nappies or accessories.

And the first person through the door on Saturday will win the nappy of their choice!

Real Nappy

So why not get involved with the real nappy revolution! By the time a baby is potty trained they will have worn 4000 – 6000 nappies. Using real, washable nappies rather than disposables can save hundreds of pounds and reduce the amount of rubbish going into your refuse bin.

Saving money

8 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK, on top of this the Real Nappy Association has calculated that savings from using Real Nappies for a first child alone can amount to £600.

You’ll be able to find out more at the event and if you’re a Lewisham resident, you can claim a free £20 voucher towards the cost of ‘Real’ cloth nappies. (Baby needs to be 18-months old or younger. Proof of pregnancy/ baby’s birth certificate needed, along with proof of address.)

There is another event later in November, on Friday 29th at Manor House Library,  34 Old Road, Lee, SE13 5SY in the Baring Room, 10 am to 12 noon

Tea, coffee and biscuits also provided at all events!

High jinx on the hill at the Hilly Fields Green Fair

A feast of fun activities took place last Sunday at the first Hilly Fields Green Fair in Hilly Fields Park, Brockley by the stone circle. Visitors had a range of environmentally friendly stalls to visit including a clothes swishing stall, a stall selling solar panels, a mirror making stall and a fruit smoothly making bike. Dodging between the showers, people were also entertained by tunes from local fun musicians playing various instruments including the trombone and saxophone

The recycling team were on hand to answer questions people had about their recycling collections as well as giving advise about composting and food waste. Many visitors came to the stall and it was also a chance for us to tell them about our new Service Standards that we are introducing across the borough: http://goo.gl/o6lWoq

As a first time event, it was pretty well attended which was helped by the sunny warm weather in the morning, but this wasn’t the case when the heavens opened later on in the day. However, this does look like it has the potential to grow if it was made into an annual event.

Lewisham shoppers bag a bargain at a ‘Big Swish’

Last Friday, the middle of Lewisham Shopping Centre was transformed into a vintage shoppers delight when the Lewisham Recycling team held a ‘Big Swish’ to raise awareness of the new textiles banks across the borough.

Big Swish 1

The middle of the shopping centre was given a ‘vintage makeover’

The term swishing refers to swopping of items, often clothes, where someone swops a garment that they no longer want with someone else’s unwanted item.

The swishing began at 10am and luckily even early visitors had a plentiful supply of quality clothes to choose from.

Bagging a bargain!

Much of the stock already on display was sourced from Lewisham’s new LMB textile banks. The quality of items on offer was very impressive, with clothing ranging from vintage garments, high street brands and designer labels.

The event was very well attended and a total of just over 80 garments were ‘swished’.  Lewisham East Member of Parliament – Heidi Alexander, also came along to show her support for textile reuse and brought along a number of ‘swishable items’.

Please bear in mind that textiles can still be placed into your recycling bin, but if placed in our textile banks there is a better chance of the item being reused rather than recycled. Remember – Reuse is always better than recycling!  And if you can’t get to a textile bank then there is always the option of using your local charity shop.

Details of where Lewisham textile bins are located can be found here:  https://recycleforlewisham.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/swishing-event-invite2.jpg

Making Rubbish Fashion

Lewisham Council has worked with fashion and design students from LESOCO , to raise awareness about the need to dispose of litter from ‘Food on the Go’ responsibly.

The students created clothes from packaging of well known fast food outlets. They were helped in their quest by kind donations of obsolete packaging  from KFC, Mcdonalds and Muffin Break.

Their stunning creations were exhibited at Lewisham Library and Lewisham shopping centre.

The creations demonstrate that not only is recycling fun, it is possible to make rubbish fashion and to behave responsibly as well.
